Abstract
Transitioning from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources has become the new set goal for the international community. As temperatures are on the rise, a call for the employment of best available techniques and technologies to address climate change has become dire to maintain global temperatures at 1,5°C. To this end, the European initiative for a just transition offers a new perspective on how clean energy can help reduce GHG emissions and attenuate the effects of global warming. Africa plays equally a pivotal role in this equation for the abundant mineral resources needed for the production of clean technologies and has significant renewable energy potential, especially in solar and wind power. Although faced with several risks and difficulties, these capacities strengthen the continent's contribution to global decarbonization while addressing its own development priorities, ensuring that this collaboration leverages structural change and equitable energy access. This article aims to study how the interregional collaboration between Europe and Africa can harness change for both continents by creating opportunities, protecting livelihoods and ensuring local benefits. Yet remains the central question if this transition is equitable and beneficial for both regions, especially in regard to the weak governance structures and insufficient financing in the African region. The exploitation of these resources without fair benefit sharing could lead to extractive patterns of dependency, while the decarbonization process may undermine societies still reliant on fossil fuels.
